Entry #3

Entry #3
School Placement: Dan River high School
Cooperating Teacher: Patricia Moore
Grades/Subjects: 9-12th Health/PE/Drivers Education
Date: September 11th, 2014

Today was my first day back since I had been in the hospital.  The school was having a 9-11 ceremony in front of the school during the end of first block.  I was told that the ceremony is done every year on 9/11.  It’s a great way for people to remember the tragedy and reflect.  The ceremony cut into part of second block.  During second block, the students were tested on running three laps in under seven minutes.  After the running was completed, we went to the weight room to test the students’ maximum in bench pressing.  During planning period, Mrs. Moore and I talked about the long term plan for our classes.  During fourth block, we reviewed what drivers should do at a traffic stop and at a traffic crash.  We talked about how to properly put a seatbelt on as a driver.  Each student had a piece of string that they used to practice.

Reflection:

Overall, my interactions with the students are increasing.  I’m learning more and more names.  I think they are still trying to learn how to pronounce my last name correctly.  As a matter of fact, my cooperating teacher actually said my name correctly right away for the first time.  We both spoke about the future lessons and what I’ll be teaching for the remainder of my time here at Dan River.  I’m anxious to get started.  On a side note, the 9-11 ceremony was great, but there were a good amount of students that were messing around during the moment of silence and during speeches.  It was extremely disrespectful.  I couldn’t help but calculate their ages and compare it to when the tragedy occurred.  The ages ranged from 3-5 years.
