In all of the PE classes, we played kickball with a big exercise ball.  In first block health, the students worked on the bell-ringer then reviewed the joints in the body.  I presented a PowerPoint on different types of fractures you can have on a bone in the skeletal system.  In fourth block Drivers Education class we played Jeopardy to help review for their test tomorrow.  Dr. Brenner was in attendance today to observe me teach.

Reflection:
Today was an eventful day to say the least.  Both Dr. Brenner and the assistant principal of Dan River observed one of my classes today.  I had found out that one of the kids I referred to the office yesterday was suspended for five days for leaving to go to the bathroom and skipping my class to see his girlfriend in the stairwell.  He had left my class for twenty minutes when I walked outside the classroom to see where he was.  When his girlfriend walked by, I knew something was going on.  I asked him where he was and of course he lied, so I told him I was not born yesterday.  Therefore, I wrote him up and the rest is history.  I am definitely learning day by day on how to handle all of these different situations.

First block started by reviewing the pronunciations of the bones in the skeletal system.  I then presented a PowerPoint on the different types of joints in the body.  In fourth block, I had the students choose a traffic sign that best represented them.  They also had to go in front of the class and explain why they felt the sign represented them.  Afterwards, we watched the video on signs, signals, and pavement markings.  They were given a worksheet so that they would pay attention and follow the movie.  In all of the PE classes, we played a game called Snowball Alley that is another form of dodgeball.  After school we had a faculty meeting.

Reflection:

Yesterday my fourth block class was very talkative.  I had to yell to get their attention.  Today, they were very respectful and really enjoyed the activity that was presented.  They had to choose a traffic sign that best represented themselves and explain why.  I had a few students that wanted to choose “Slippery When Wet” but I did not allow them to do so.  They kids were creative.  After school, prior to our faculty meeting I created a bulletin board that presented all of their drawings.  In the staff meeting, I was introduced to everyone and I received a warm welcome.

Today in all three PE classes, we played the game Jail Break.  The classes were separated into two teams and the objective was to make it to the other teams’ basket or hit them by throwing a dodgeball.  We played this game last week, but I still clarified all the rules in case there was a student who missed a class.  In first block Health we attempted to identify all of the bones in the body, but we ran out of time.  Therefore, we will finish tomorrow.  The students had a quiz on the traffic signs.  Their bell-ringer had specific instructions so that they could prepare to take the quiz.

Reflection:
Students in all of the classes were well-behaved.  In fourth block, I had two girls that said they were on their cycles and wanted to not dress-out.  Luckily, I had my host teacher there to help me out with that situation.  I really didn’t know what to say.  My host teacher just told them that we would need a doctor’s note to allow them to sit out from the activities.  I can say that each day I am learning new things and most of them is not even readying the material out of a book.  Student teaching has allowed me to learn and experience other things that come with the territory of being a teacher.

The first block class came into the gym efficiently, so we went right into warm-up stretches and into our ultimate football game.  Afterwards, the students got dressed and we went into the classroom and reviewed our skeletal system lesson on Thursday.  I then had a PowerPoint presentation for the class on the process of ossification and identifying cartilage.  In second block, I took my students into the weight room and explained the proper form on a deadlift and maxed out on the lift.  During planning, I worked on the quiz I was going to give out to my fourth block Drivers Ed class on Tuesday.  In fourth block, we talked about traffic lights and all of the different types of pavement markings.

Reflection:
In my fourth block today, I had two students that had their head down during instruction.  One of them I told on Thursday to quit sleeping in class.  That student, I had sit outside of the class for a few moments in between slides and I spoke with him.  In that same class I had a student complain that one of the slides she couldn’t read because the font was small.  During the presentation, I made the font larger and the rest of the day went smoothly.  I had all students engaged in the PE activity.  Students are really enjoying the activities provided and I am proud to see that.

The students today had early release due to the end of the grading period, which was six weeks.  My host teacher and I decided to let the students participate in PE for the entire blocks since they were only an hour long.  In all of the classes, we decided to play a game called Rapid Fire.  Six students were chosen to be in the middle of the basketball court with all of the dodgeballs.  In order for them to throw the balls at the students they must stay inside the circle.  Everyone else in the class was at one end of the gym.  Once I blew the whistle, the students had 10-15 seconds to cross to the other side without getting hit.  The rounds continued until there was one person standing at the end of the game.

Reflection:
The students really enjoyed the game.  What I enjoyed was watching the girls in the classes actually trying and participating.  It was a pretty hectic game with students running all over the place, but I was glad that no one got hurt and they had a good time.  Students were active and the game served its purpose by increasing students’ heart rates.  The students dread running the mile, but games like these are just as effective.  Today was a short day, but a very productive day.

First block has wanted to play Ultimate Frisbee all week, so I created an Ultimate Frisbee lesson.  We started out by working in groups.  The students practiced the proper way to throw and catch a Frisbee.  Next, the class was separated into two teams and I explained the activity.  After the game, we went into the classroom and we started a new lesson on the skeletal system.  A bell-ringer was provided to introduce the lesson and then I went into my PowerPoint presentation.  In second block, we did a fitness test by seeing how many pushups and jump ropes they could complete in one minute.  Afterwards, we played ultimate Frisbee against the other PE class in the gym.  Third block planning was use deficiently to create lessons for Friday and Monday.  In fourth block, the students completed the bell-ringer on the shapes of traffic sings.  We then played a game in which the class was separated into two teams.  One student from each team would go up to the whiteboard and I would call out a traffic sign.  The first student to correctly draw the traffic sign would win a point for their team.  After the game, the students went into the gym and we played Ultimate Frisbee.

Reflection:

The day was a complete success.  All of the classes went smoothly.  My host teacher left me with the classes all day.  The students have been giving me good feedback.  They said that I am making learning fun and they are enjoying all the activities I have introduced.  What has been great is that no one has asked to just have free-time.  This placement couldn’t get much better and I am proud of the work I have been doing.

First block came into the gym in the beginning of class.  We did a light warm-up and went right into our activity, which was called line ball.  It is a variation of a volleyball game, with basically the same roles, yet they use an exercise ball instead of a volleyball.  I believe I had every student participating, which was great to see.  After the gym, the students had a test on the benefits of health.  If the students were done, they would work on a word search until the class was completed.  Second block played the line volleyball game the entire period.  My planning period today was used efficiently to plan tomorrow’s lessons.  My fourth block walked in and started on their bell-ringer activity immediately.  We spoke about the bell-ringers and then they were given a pre-test on identifying traffic signs.  Afterwards, we went over the answers and I taught about the meanings of the colors in traffic signs.

Reflection:
All classes were well-behaved.  My fourth block class had a few students that were a little talkative but not enough to disrupt the class.  I had one student that laid his head down on his desk the entire period.  I let him do it but spoke with him afterwards.  I told him that was the last time he would be allowed to do that.  If he decided to lay his head down again, he would be reprimanded.  He seemed to react well to the talk, so we will see if he actually listens.
